In a collaboration with Professor Craig S. Kaplan, we created a mathematical marvel: the Tessera rugs. It is art threaded by code. The Tessera’s design is inspired by parquet deformations. Conceived in the 1960s, these are “patterns that shift gradually in one dimension”.

Our weavers in Rajasthan have achieved the impossible: reflect computer generated perfection in a handwoven textile. Replicating Kaplan’s intricate design to the best of their abilities, they brought a touch of humanity. The eyes linger here a moment, there a moment, finding new nuances each time.
