Carpet Design Awards, 2023

Azmas Rugs enter the race for the ‘Carpet Oscars’

We have officially submitted five entries for the Carpet Design Awards, 2022. Known colloquially as the ‘Carpet Oscars’, the awards offer an international badge of distinction to shed light on hand-made pieces of exceptional design.

Needless to say, an accolade of this kind would mean a great deal to our fledgling brand.

The rugs up for the award are from our collection ‘Evolving Patterns’. A series of rugs that animate in space, rather than time. Each piece begins with a motif that undergoes a gradual metamorphosis.

We opted for a flat weave technique to accurately express the precision of the pixel grid in which the designs originated. As is the nature of a hand-made rug, our weavers brought subtle human imperfections to the computer-generated patterns.

The following rugs have been submitted for an award:

Grid by Craig S. Kaplan

A mesmerising design that evolves from a simple checkerboard to a dense, maze-like thicket in its centre.

Shapeshifter by Michael Rowan

An Escher-esque interlocking of two tiles that morph simultaneously from rectangle to hexagon and bow-tie.

Grid by David Mrugala

A rug that expresses the harmony of a repetitive variation between two states, from 0 to 1 and back to 0.

Fortuity by David Mrugala

Generated by an infinitely-alterable algorithm, this rug embodies the interplay of chance and design, chaos and control.

Cafe De Jazz by Azmi Merican

Based on a design by Azmas Rugs’ founder, the columnar figures are manipulated horizontally to give a sense of movement that evokes musical notes.
